A couple of days before Christmas, on the most beautiful December morning, I met up with Kyra at Priest Point Park. It's important to me to do creative work occasionally to test out new prompts, skills and perspectives. This shoot is full of hair flips, laughter and the adorableness that is Kyra. I actually reached out to Kyra on Instagram because I love working with your everyday beauty and not just models. While models are fantastic, I love working with people who aren't trained in front of the camera because it's another opportunity to learn directing and relating to clients. So a big thank you to Kyra for taking one for the team and hearing me out. Who knows, maybe my next test subject may be you!?
I often talk about wardrobe, hair and makeup playing a large role in your portraits. Dressing in tones that are minimal and complimentary to the style of the location and my photography style are the first step. I love Kyra's deep green sweater, jeans and THOSE CLOGS. No, I never thought I'd be raving about clogs... but I'm obsessed. You can find her clogs here: Lotta from Stockholm. Her second outfit was a simple top change. People often think black is boring, but it's one of my favorite colors to photograph. Black can be slimming and contrasting. It's a color that is completely neutral from a background and gives you the opportunity to be the highlight of the photo. Kyra's makeup is also perfectly done- a mix of a full face, but not overdone. Her lipstick matches her outfits and her foundation is the correct tone. Highlighter and contouring are done with a light hand, adding depth but not heavy enough to reflect into the camera. Highlighter is one trend that I would typically forgo for shoots. If done well, it can be pretty, but getting the correct color and amount can be difficult. If heavy handed, it can be a nightmare to edit, and even if it isn't heavy, can still reflect light and result in an overly bright or splotchy looking face. When in doubt, leave it out.
