Puyallup Head Shots at Vassey Nursery LLC

Life is always changing and so are we. I am about to turn 28 in a few weeks and I've found new winkles, more WHITE (YIKES!!) hairs than I'd like to admit and pudge from the stress of selling and buying a house. As a photographer, I am always hiding behind the camera. I HATE photos of myself, which is pretty sad and hypocritical when I'm always sitting here preaching to love yo' self. I'm ashamed and embarrassed of my change in weight and feel more awkward than ever in front of the camera. However, how can I better guide my clients if I'm not occasionally in their shoes? With this change in my season of life, I asked my dear friend Kayleen if she would be willing to quickly snap some photos of me in a place that I love. When clients tell me "I'm so awkward!" It's okay girl... I've been there. And recently. I had a meltdown of "what do I do with my hands" and a brainstorm sesh while I acted out a Talladega Nights scene. (Worth a watch if you ever do a session with me! haha >>> Watch: "I don't know what to do with my hands..."

Despite my awkwardness, we got a few photos that I absolutely love! It's so important to not only have photos that make you feel beautiful, but to have photos done in a place that means something to you. If you know me, you know that I love gardening and nurseries are one of my favorite places. My husband and I occasionally visit them just for the heck of it. What's more calming than walking through a lush scenery of blooming, fragrant flowers? On a beautiful day last summer, my husband and I discovered Vassey Nursery LLC. Every time we've come to Vassey, we've had wonderful customer service filled with smiles and employees willing to help explain just how to nurture each plant. On a distinct visit last year, a woman deliberated with me for at least a half an hour over my plan to try mixing and mingling an evergreen clematis and a perennial clematis. My intention was to get a clematis that would stay green year round, and one that had a little bit showier flowers. That same trip I also fell in love with a Naked Bee Orange Blossom lotion from the gift shop that I initially passed up, only to be turned around by my husband who handed me a $20 bill and told me to go back and get it.

This time was no different. I had called ahead and talked to Mr. Vassey to ask permission to photograph on the premises. It's important to me as a professional to always ask permission before photographing in a business and to be as respectful during my shoot as possible to not disturb customers or employees. Mr. Vassey was welcoming and the employees were so friendly while we captured the ever awkward me and the idyllic settings. They smiled and bustled about us, stocking plants and hefting around gorgeous wooden hanging baskets. Heavy rain and wind tore at us outside and darkened the sky, but the nursery remained picturesque.

While bewitched by their stunning Dove Tree poised over the koi pond, a sweet elderly man came to check on us and told us a story about the tree. He explained that the tree had been planted by the Vassey's about 50 years prior and how the tree was discovered in a remote area of China in the late 1800's and brought to Europe and the US in the early 1900's. It's known by many names, such as a: Dove Tree, Handkerchief Tree and Ghost Tree. It's moments like this that make customers form an emotional attachment to a business. I can rave about how stunning this little nursery is, but having someone take the time to bring you into their history is meaningful. See photos of the Dove Tree at the bottom of the post!

As soon as our house sale is finalized and we're into a new home to spruce up, I will be back for a Dove Tree and more plants to make our house a "lush" home.
